“Celiac sprue is being diagnosed with increased frequency in the adult age group. Yet, most adults with celiac disease remain undiagnosed as symptoms may be minimal. In fact, iron deficiency anemia alone is the most common presentation in adults. Nevertheless, identification of celiac patients is crucial as recent studies confirm that adherence to a gluten free diet substantially reduces the risk of the most feared complications of the disease. Interestingly, many adults relate a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms to gluten consumption but do not have celiac sprue. These patients may have therapeutic options other than a gluten free diet.”
